One of the most fascinating parts of my career has been discovering how hyper-specific language and associations can build connection and deepen understanding. Sometimes, this means leaning into humor—like joking about microwaving your elbow—a kind of humor that resonates with those fascinated by contradictions and impossibilities, the ones that can only be imagined and harnessed through language.
These small, quirky details might seem insignificant, but they can be powerful anchors in communication.
For many of the adults with developmental disabilities I’ve worked with, broad or abstract concepts don’t always land. But a familiar sensation, a concrete image, or a shared joke can create an immediate bridge to understanding. Facilitation isn’t just about delivering information—it’s about finding the right way in.
What seems hyper-specific or unconventional to one person might be exactly what sparks engagement for another. By embracing humor, sensory experiences, and vivid details, we make learning more accessible and meaningful. When we take the time to notice and celebrate these moments, we’re not just communicating—we’re fostering a sense of belonging. Let’s keep finding joy in the details and laughter in the learning!
